John Barrette has called Carson City home since 2008. He, and his wife Jean left Nebraska for Northern Nevada and say it's one of the best decisions they have ever made. They believe it is the best city of its size in the west, and love the quality of life Carson City has to offer, including outdoor recreation and the arts.
John is a former award winning journalist. He spent much of his four decade career covering politics for both print and broadcast news organizations in Nebraska. After moving to Carson City he joined the Nevada Appeal, devoting much of his work to covering local government and business. He has also worked at KRNV-TV as well the Reno News and Review.
In his spare time John enjoys reading, particularly biographies, music and the performing arts. He also likes to take advantage of our abundant out door recreational opportunities such as biking, camping and hiking and keeps busy training his new Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy, Dodi.
John and his wife are active members of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and St. John’s of the Wilderness near Lake Tahoe. They are both members of the Brewery Arts Center, Muscle Powered, The Carson City Arts Initiative and the Carson City Historical Society.
John decided to leave the Nevada Appeal in late 2015 and knew that his 40 years of objective government reporting gave him unique experience that would benefit Carson City. He has witnessed firsthand how thoughtful, smart leadership can be an asset to a community.
