A busy Thursday awaits come May 19, both for Carson City and for me regarding my campaign along with something meaningful on a personal level for me.
First, and foremost for the city we all love, the Fiscal Year 2017 budget is up for a public hearing and probable final action next Thursday.
It covers operations, capital needs funding regarding the physical assets over which our city government has stewardship, and other matters of import to every resident.
At the first meeting in May, the city's Board of Supervisors put final touches on a nearly $137 million spending blueprint. And that's what it is, a blueprint. It's not set in stone.
For example, should more revenue than projected come in from taxes from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017, it could be used for additional purposes.
I have proposed, and will again next Thursday, that additional tax receipts be used for deferred maintenance, particularly for road repairs. Deferred maintenance becomes more costly with each passing year.
The board, acting as the Redevelopment Authority, will also take up the redevelopment budget.
Board members also are likely to approve two grant applications involving the Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act for about $2 million for a hazardous fuels collection project and treatment of hundreds of acres around the urban area to reduce wildfire potential that can threaten Carson City.
In addition, May 19 holds much in store for me after I spend time at the board meeting. First of all, it is my brother's birthday and I'll be calling him to wish him many happy returns.
By the way, as an aside, I believe my brother to date is the only person not living in or doing business in Carson City to donate to my campaign coffers.
Secondly, Marilyn Peshek is hosting a meet and greet event for my campaign at her home in the Seelinger Elementary School area next Thursday.
It's my campaign's second of several planned meet and greet parties, including one next month my wife and I plan at our home.
Thanks for reading and, I hope, your support.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
